One of the best items for saving marginal red wines is a good funnel.

Finding bad tasting red wines has never really been a problem; but, making them worth drinking can be tricky. We won’t pretend to know the reasons why funnels and aeration work, but they can, and often do! Interestingly, we have discovered that muliple aerations can save a truly miserable wine from the sink. And since wine, even reasonably priced wine, is not free; saving it is a good thing!

Wine funnels come in all prices but $20 will get you a very fine specimen. It is best to get a funnel that has both a screen (to catch unwanted wine chunks) and an indirect exit from the bottom of the funnel, causing the wine to ‘spray’ out inside your decanter (yes, keep the down spout inside a decanter unless you like cleaning the floor).

An item worth noting is that funnels are not supposed to help white wines very much. Hmmm, maybe we should test that theory out. When we do we’ll post our highly scientific results here!
